Napoli, Italy 2020
On October 31st the factory Whirlpool in Naples (Argine street 302, Ponticelli, Italy) has closed its doors. 350 workers are today out of work, in the middle of a pandemic. The factory in Ponticelli was producing washing machines from 56 years and was one of the best in the world.
Many families in the area of Naples worked there. Gennaro (42 years old) and his wife Maria Rosaria (36 years old) worked in the factory together (they have a three-years-old son). They were very proud of their job at Whirlpool and considered the factory like a second family.
“Politics have failed us” they say. The actual Minister of Economic Development Stefano Patuanelli, and his predecessor Luigi di Maio, promised not to close the factory. Unfortunately, the promises have not been followed by facts and the factory in Ponticelli stopped producing. The workers have tried everything to save the factory: strikes, many travels to the Ministry in Rome and sit-in.
“Napoli non molla!” (Napoli won’t let go!) was the slogan written on many t-shirts, but it wasn’t enough.
